IRCC Speeds Up Processing, Reducing Canada Immigration Backlog Below 830,000

The backlog of immigration applications in Canada has seen a significant reduction, dropping below 830,000 for the first time since early 2025. 

As of March 2025, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reported that the backlog stands at 821,200, down from 892,100 in January, marking a 7.95% decrease in just two months. 

This decline is part of a broader trend, as the backlog has remained under the 1 million mark for three consecutive months.

The IRCC defines a backlog as any application taking longer than the department’s service standards to process. 

For example, applications through the Express Entry system are expected to be processed within six months. The IRCC has implemented various measures to manage and reduce this backlog, particularly following the pandemic years when application volumes surged.

Key Initiatives Driving Reduction

Several strategies have contributed to this positive trend:

  • Increased Processing Capacity: The IRCC has ramped up its workforce and invested in digital infrastructure to handle the influx of applications more efficiently. This includes hiring additional staff and utilizing technology to streamline processes.
  • Automation and Digital Tools: The department has adopted advanced analytics and automation tools to expedite processing times. Over 80% of visitor visa applications are now processed using these automated systems, which help identify straightforward cases and assist officers with decision-making summaries.
  • Application Caps: In an effort to control application volumes, the IRCC introduced caps on certain immigration streams. For instance, the intake of new international study permits was reduced by approximately 35% compared to previous years, limiting approved permits to 360,000 for 2024.
  • Balanced Inventory Management: By adjusting the intake of new applications relative to processing capacity, IRCC aims to keep application volumes manageable without compromising service standards.

Current Immigration 

As of February 2025, total applications across all immigration categories reached 2,029,400, with over half—1,208,200—processed within service standards. 

This reflects a more efficient processing environment where applicants can expect clearer timelines and reduced uncertainty regarding their applications.

The IRCC’s commitment to maintaining stable immigration targets is also noteworthy. According to the Immigration Levels Plan for 2025–2027, Canada aims to welcome 485,000 permanent residents in 2025 and increase that number to 500,000 in subsequent years. 

This stability is designed to enhance predictability in managing inventories and improving overall processing times.

The ongoing improvements in application processing are encouraging for those looking to immigrate to Canada. With faster processing times and clearer guidelines on application requirements, aspiring immigrants can better navigate their paths toward permanent residency or temporary status.
